While the benefits of 3D printing solutions are well known in the world of design and prototyping, most FDM 3D printers, unfortunately, fail to offer strong and durable solutions ready to withstand the rigid and at times, abusive industrial applications.

My name is Menachem Altaras, I am a 3D application specialist, and I would like to introduceas as part of Additive manufacturing solutions, the 3D composites printing technology. In an attempt to provide a broad set of 3D printing solutions, here at Ballistic-Bit, we have added the Anisoprinter as part of our industrial 3D printer solutions. This enables us to offer our clients the benefits of composite material manufacturing.

3D Printing Filaments

PLA and ABS, as the most commonly used 3D printing filaments, fall short when attempting to adapt them to more rigid applications. They are unable to withstand high temperatures nor offer adequate rigidity and mostly warp under extended stress conditions.

The benefit of composite materials is their strength, durability and, lightweight. Composite materials offer unique characteristics not found in commonly used materials, like great weight to strength ratio, extreme heat resistance and outstanding stiffens the geometry. Unfortunately, the manufacturing of such materials is usually more expensive, limiting its adoption to the high-end users. The usage of composite materials can be found in the aerospace industry, high-end sporting goods, prestigious car racing, just to name a few.

While manufacturing composite material using the traditional methods is expensive, Anisoprint additive 3D printing offers a faster, cost-efficient and dynamic solution for producing composite parts. for the end-user. In fact, according to Anisoprint, their composites parts are 30 times stronger than pure plastic, seven times lighter than steel, and two times stronger and lighter than aluminum. Composite materials can be found on the aerospace industry, high-end sporting goods, prestigious car racing, just to name a few.

As part of our 3D printer's portfolio, we offer Anisoprint’s unique 3D Printer. These particular printers, the Composer A3 and the Composer A4, offer our clients the ability to print using Composite materials. Both printers offer a large print volume (A4: 297х210х140mm; A3: 460х297х210mm) capable of accommodating a wide range of printable products. The PROM IS 500, is capable of printing Ultem and PEEK because of their extremely high--temperature requirements (4000).

Anisoprinters’ use a dual nozzle configuration, one for reinforcing materials like Anisoprint CCF 1.5k (Composite Carbon Fiber) or Anisoprint CBF (Composite Basalt Fiber), while the other FFF extruder can be used with PETG, PA, PC, ABS, TPU Filament & more, to meet part design goals.

The carbon filament is reimpregnated in an epoxy and just as importantly, it bonds to a wide variety of polymers. They have also developed a system that continuously deploys carbon threads throughout the printing filament, making them extraordinarily strong.

There are numerous advantages to composite material printing. For example:

  • Aura, customized Anisoprint slicing software, enabling designers to manipulate, with great precision, the distribution of fiber vs nylon, in a lattice structure, throughout the areas where there is anticipated structural stress. This allows for the best weight to strength ratio and thermal resistance, as well as smooth finish, and overall optimal printing results.
  • Open G-Codes for further expansion and manipulation.
  • The use of a wide range of materials, such as Ultem, PEEK, PLA, PETG, PA, PC, ABS, TPU, in addition to carbon or basalt fiber, meeting a wide variety of rigid design specifications.

  • Each of the printer’s extruders comes with its own fan, helping with cooling the printed material and preventing warping, as well as other issues.

Anisoprint already found its way into the very demanding auto, marine and aerospace industries. The composite material approach ensures low porosity, good adhesion of fiber to polymer and, general superior mechanical properties. It is now possible to print end-use parts that are stronger, lighter, and cheaper than their counterparts from the other materials (metal, plastic, non-optimal composites).
