KLM Engine Services, 3D printing for custom production

KLM Engine Services is responsible for the repair and overhaul of jet engines for KLM and its customers. During the overhaul process, some engine parts need new polishing and coating. Uncoated areas of parts that need coating are protected by professional heat resistant tape. This tape is applied and removed by service engineers manually, which is time consuming.

KLM Engine Services now has a custom 3D printed splash screen. This fits perfectly with the original part and can be used many times during coating instead of the original taping method that must be manually attached and removed each time. This tool helps KLM Engine Services save time during the revision process and reduces costs by 80%.

Builder Extreme 2000

Our Builder Extreme 2000 is one of the largest FDM 3D printers available today. Despite its large print volume, there is no loss of print quality, not even at the top. With a print volume of 700 x 700 x 1820 mm (XYZ), it is considered the perfect 3D printer for 3D prototyping, statues and really tall buildings.

With the Ultra HD 3D scanner in 3DMZ, the original part of the engine was scanned and digitized on the computer. Using special software, they created a negative model of the area that the coating spray cannot reach and 3D printed this part on the large-scale 3D printer on a heat resistant material. This part was 3D printed on the Builder Extreme 1500 in a heat resistant polymer.
